American Payroll Association and CyberShift Promote Financial Literacy for Workforce Outsource Services at Teaching Event

- Inner-city Young Adults Learn to Make Smart Financial Decisions & Maximize Paychecks -

PARSIPPANY, N.J. (September 16, 2009) – The American Payroll Association (APA) and CyberShift, Inc., a global provider of workforce management and expense management software and services, held a financial literacy program for Workforce Outsource Services participants. Titled “Bring Home the Gold,” the event was held during APA’s Money Matters National Education Day (MMNED) on Thursday, September 10, 2009.  Rutgers-Newark was the host institution. Attendees gained first-hand knowledge on payroll and benefits topics from two experts who helped them understand how to maximize their earnings for increased savings and financial security.

“Workforce Outsource Services is a not-for-profit 501 c 3 charity designed to create alternatives to offshore outsourcing through the education of high-potential young adults from empowerment zones and other disadvantaged areas in inner cities.  This educational event was very valuable as it helped our students plan for their financial future,” said Dr. Arthur Langer, chairman of Workforce Outsource Services and a faculty member at Columbia University.

WOS distinguishes itself as a unique company that hires, formally educates, and trains employees from local communities.  WOS provides “ladders of ascent” to its minority employees by creating growth into management and ownership of its business.  At the “Bring Home the Gold” event, WOS employees working at participating sponsoring companies leveraged this informational session as an opportunity to gain more knowledge about their paychecks and financial resources.

“CyberShift is a supporter of WOS’ mission and we are pleased to be able to partner with the American Payroll Association to provide this meaningful educational program to the students of WOS,” said Robert E. Farina, CEO, CyberShift.  “We’d also like to thank the host institution, Rutgers-Newark, for their support of this event.”

Empowering Youth to Make Better Financial Choices

“A paycheck opens doors to opportunity when managed correctly,” said Michael J. Schoelles, CPP, president of the North Jersey Chapter of the American Payroll Association. “By knowing where their money is going from the start, our young workers can take control of their finances and put more money in their pockets each payday.”

“The greatest gift you can give youth is a financial education,” said presenter Tom Altier, CFO of CyberShift, Inc. ”Through this program, we provided tips and tools they need to make informed decisions with their money. Managing money effectively to meet present needs and future goals is a learned skill.”

Altier also imparted a detailed understanding of the benefits and retirement programs that may be offered throughout the students’ careers by their employers.

Given the newness of their work experience, participants were quick to welcome the program’s curriculum to unleash the power of their paycheck, maximize their take home pay and learn how to start saving for the future now.

The instructional session presented by Colleen Flores, CPP, a board member of the North Jersey Chapter of the American Payroll Association covered such topics as:

  • Completing a W-4 Form;
  • Calculating a Paycheck; and
  • Understanding Required Paycheck Deductions

“If we can help students understand the components of their paycheck, they can make better choices that will directly impact their take home pay,” said Flores.

“This was a terrific hands-on opportunity to learn what I needed to know about stretching my paycheck and getting the most I can from my money,” said Dwain Sotilleo of Maplewood, N.J., a Workforce Outsource Services program participant who attended the event. “The instructors really took the time to help us ‘get it’ and be in charge of our financial future.”

About WOS

Workforce Outsource Service (WOS) programs are designed to create alternatives to offshore outsourcing through the education of high-potential low-income young adults from empowerment zones and other disadvantaged areas in inner cities and rural environments. It provides an alternative path to education and employment by forming integrated affiliations with high schools, institutions of higher education, major corporations, and local social ventures. The WOS program provides a fully paid scholarship for a 16-month IT certification program offered through Rutgers University-Newark for New Jersey students, and Columbia University for New York students, as well as employment either directly with WOS or eventually with the organization’s clients. Students learn how to work in a corporate environment using a unique mentoring and adult development approach. WOS has also branched out to other states such as Ohio, where it has forged another relationship with the University of Akron.
